Temporary Residence Permits

South African immigration law makes provision for temporary residence permits on the basis of the following situations:

  • Employment
  • Study
  • Exchange
  • Retirement
  • Family relations
  • Medical treatment

Note that these should not be confused with the visas. Visas are not residence permits. A visa only allows you entry to South Africa. The immigration officer at the airport or harbour will examine your visa, and if they are satisfied, they will issue your temporary residence permit.

In addition to the forms and documents required by each type of permit, you may also have to provide the following.

  • Form BI-806 – a radiological report
  • Form BI-811 – a medical certificate

All forms are available on this website, on the Forms page.
